What the Day of the Week Calculator Does

Enter any date and the tool names its weekday instantly, Monday through Sunday. It works for dates far in the past and the future, so you can check birthdays, holidays, deadlines, and planned trips.

The audience is broad. Project managers check whether milestone dates fall on weekends, genealogists verify family records, students confirm history assignments, writers keep fictional timelines accurate, and travelers pick departure days that suit their schedules.

How the Math Works

Many calculators rely on Zeller’s congruence, a compact formula that turns any Gregorian date into a weekday number from 0 to 6. In one common form, h = (q + floor(13(m+1)/5) + K + floor(K/4) + floor(J/4) + 5J) mod 7, where q is the day, m is the month with January and February treated as months 13 and 14 of the previous year, K is the year of the century, and J is the zero-based century. Zero means Saturday, 1 means Sunday, and so on.

Try January 1, 2000. With the extra-month rule, January becomes month 13 of 1999, so q = 1, m = 13, K = 99, and J = 19. The terms add up to 1 + 36 + 99 + 24 + 4 + 95 = 259, and 259 mod 7 leaves 0. That means Saturday, and January 1, 2000 really was a Saturday.

Using the Tool and Avoiding Mistakes

Type your date into the Date field, following the format shown next to it, then press the Show Day of the Week button. The weekday appears at once, with no page reload.

Watch for two pitfalls. First, day and month order: 03/04 means March 4 in the United States but April 3 elsewhere, so slow down with ambiguous entries. Second, the Gregorian calendar only dates from 1582, and countries adopted it in different years, so results for very old dates can disagree with local historical records.

Frequently Asked Questions

What day of the week was January 1, 2000?

It was a Saturday. Many people remember the millennium celebrations, and you can verify the weekday by typing 01/01/2000 into the Date field and pressing Show Day of the Week.

How does Zeller’s congruence compute the weekday?

It condenses a date into one number from 0 to 6 using the month, day, and year, then maps that number to a weekday. Zero means Saturday in the Gregorian version of the formula.

Can it find dates that fall on a weekday?

Yes, many versions list every date in a range that lands on a chosen weekday, such as all Mondays in a year, which is handy for scheduling meetings or planning weekly tasks.

Does it work for very old historical dates?

Yes, but check which calendar was in force. Britain and its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar only in 1752, so dates recorded before that switch can sit about 11 days away from the computed result.

Why do January and February count as months 13 and 14?

Zeller’s congruence treats January and February as months 13 and 14 of the previous year. This pushes the leap day to the end of the counting year, which keeps the weekday formula simple and consistent.
