This tool measures the exact gap between two people’s ages and reports it in years, months, and days. Couples planning milestones, siblings comparing birthdays, and lawyers or caseworkers checking legal age gaps all rely on it. It removes all guesswork from questions such as who is older and by exactly how much.
Genealogy hobbyists use it too. Old family records often give only a birth year, so comparing known years against dated events helps pin down real birth dates.
The method anchors on the older birth date and counts forward: whole years first, then whole months, then the leftover days, borrowing from the previous month when day numbers do not line up. Age entered directly works the same way, simply subtracting the smaller age from the larger.
For example, someone born on March 10, 1990 and someone born on June 15, 1995 sit 5 years, 3 months, and 5 days apart. Five full years reach March 10, 1995, three more months reach June 10, and the last 5 days close the gap to June 15.
Start with the mode picker labelled Calculate Age Difference By: and choose Dates of Birth for the most exact reading. Type Date of Birth 1 and Date of Birth 2, then press Calculate Difference to see the answer broken into years, months, and days. The Ages and Years of Birth options are handy shortcuts when full dates are not available.
Use full birth dates whenever possible, because year-only input can hide almost twelve months of real difference. Also keep in mind that the day figure shifts when the anchor date changes, so tools that anchor differently may disagree slightly.
No. The calculator takes the two dates in either order and subtracts the earlier one, so June 15, 1995 followed by March 10, 1990 still reports 5 years, 3 months, and 5 days.
Yes. Pick Years of Birth and enter Year 1 and Year 2; a 1990 to 1995 pair shows 5 years, though the true gap can be anywhere from 4 years and 1 day up to nearly 6 years.
Sometimes by a little. Anchoring on the older birthday and borrowing days from the previous month gives 5 years, 3 months, 5 days for the March 10, 1990 and June 15, 1995 pair, while a rough day count may differ.
The tool reports exact elapsed time between two birth dates, which you can compare against a threshold such as 18 years. Local rules decide the rest, so verify requirements with the agency or court involved.
Fully exact. The count walks real calendar days, so leap years such as 1992 add a February 29, and a February 29 birthday can nudge the days and months figures by one.
