Why count business days instead of calendar days

Deadlines, shipping windows, and payroll runs live on business days, not calendar days. This calculator counts the working days between two dates or adds a set number of them to a starting date, skipping Saturdays and Sundays automatically.

Project managers, HR teams, freight planners, and lawyers tracking filing deadlines use it weekly. Anyone waiting on a bank transfer or a permit approval benefits from the same reality check. Recruiters use it as well when quoting notice periods and offer start dates.

The counting method with a worked span

The method walks each calendar day from the start date toward the end date, keeping Mondays through Fridays and discarding Saturdays and Sundays. In Add Business Days mode the same walk starts the day after your starting date and stops when the requested number of working days is reached. Leap days and long months pose no problem because each date is inspected one by one.

For example, October 5 to October 15, 2024 covers ten elapsed days, and because the start falls on a Saturday, removing the three weekend days leaves 7 business days: the 7th through the 11th plus the 14th and the 15th.

How to run a count and stay accurate

Open the Calculator Mode: picker and choose Count Business Days to measure a span or Add Business Days to project a deadline. Enter the Starting Date and the End Date, decide whether Include Last Day: should be Yes or No, then press Calculate.

Set Official Holidays: to Exclude when statutory holidays apply in your region, because a date like December 25 usually removes another working day. Also treat the Include Last Day toggle carefully: with the end date on a weekday, switching it from No to Yes adds exactly one business day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Saturdays and Sundays always excluded?

Yes. The standard five day week discards both weekend days, so October 7 through 11, 2024 counts as 5 business days while the same stretch holds 7 calendar days.

What does Include Last Day change?

It decides whether the end date itself is counted. For October 5 to October 15, 2024 you get 7 with the end included and 6 without, since October 15 is a Tuesday.

How do holidays affect the total?

Each statutory holiday removes one more day from the count. Enabling holiday exclusion on a span containing two holidays would drop a 10 working day result to 8.

Can I add 10 business days to a date?

Yes, switch to Add Business Days mode. Starting from Friday, October 4, 2024, ten working days land on Friday, October 18, because the two weekends in between add four inactive days.

Does it work across months and years?

Yes, the count runs continuously across month and year boundaries. From December 23, 2024 to January 3, 2025 the counter reports 9 business days, because just one weekend, December 28 and 29, falls inside the span.
