What a Significant Figures Calculator Does

Significant figures are the digits in a number that carry meaning, and scientists use them to show how precise a measurement is. This tool rounds numbers to a chosen number of significant figures and can also count them for you. Chemistry lab reports and physics exams often require a set number of significant figures.

The Rounding Rule and a Worked Example

Rounding keeps the most important digits first: nonzero digits always count, while leading zeros never do. To round 0.00456 to 2 significant figures, the nonzero digits are 4 and 5, and the next digit is 6, so round up to 0.0046. Rounding 12.456 to 3 significant figures gives 12.5, because the fourth digit is 5, which forces the 4 upward.

How to Use It and What to Avoid

Start by choosing Rounding or Counter mode. For rounding, type into the Number field, set the Round to box, and press Calculate. The rounding rule can be set to Half away from zero or Half to even for tie cases. A classic pitfall is confusing significant figures with decimal places: 0.00456 to 2 decimal places would be 0.00.

Counter mode answers a slightly different job, counting rather than rounding. Enter 0.0010400 and it reports 5 significant figures: the 1, the 0 trapped between nonzero digits, the 4, and the two trailing zeros after the decimal point, which are significant. The same value written as 0.00104 would show only 3. Ties highlight the Rounding rule setting: 0.0125 to 2 significant figures gives 0.012 under Half to even but 0.013 under Half away from zero, so always set the convention your course expects before pressing Calculate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are significant figures in a number?

Significant figures are the digits carrying real information about a value. Nonzero digits always count, so 12.456 has five, while leading zeros like those in 0.00456 count for nothing.

What is 0.00456 to 2 significant figures?

The leading zeros are only placeholders, so the meaningful digits begin at 4. The next digit 6 rounds the 5 upward, giving 0.0046 as the answer.

What is 12.456 to 3 significant figures?

Keep the digits 1, 2 and 4, then look at the next digit, 5. Because it rounds away, 12.456 becomes 12.5 at 3 significant figures.

Do leading zeros count as significant?

No. Leading zeros only position the decimal point, so 0.00456 has 3 significant figures, not 5. Zeros between nonzero digits, as in 105, do count.

What is half to even rounding?

It settles exact halves by moving to the nearest even digit, so 12.5 rounds to 12. Half away from zero would instead give 13.
