Lean Body Mass:
Your total body weight includes fat and everything else, and that everything else is lean body mass: muscle, bone, organs, blood, and body water. Knowing the lean figure tells you how much of any weight change was muscle versus fat, which matters enormously for dieters and athletes.
Coaches set protein targets from lean mass, clinicians dose some drugs per kilogram of lean tissue, and lifters use it to judge realistic muscle goals. BMI cannot provide any of this, because it lumps both tissue types together.
The direct rule is simple: LBM equals Weight: multiplied by (1 minus body fat percentage divided by 100). Take an 80 kg man at 20 percent fat: 80 times 0.80 leaves 64 kg of lean mass and 16 kg of fat.
When body fat is unknown, the tool leans on prediction formulas fitted to laboratory data. Boer, James, and Hume each estimate lean mass from height and weight, and men can also reach it through the Navy neck and waist tape method, with the results across formulas usually agreeing within a few percent.
Choose Imperial or Metric, pick Male or Female, then fill in Age:, Weight:, Height:, and, where the tape estimate applies, Neck: and Waist: at the larynx and navel exactly as described for the body fat method. The results panel shows lean mass in kg or lbs alongside the fat mass remainder.
Watch the classic slips: entering centimeters while Imperial is selected, taping over clothing, or weighing right after a large meal and salt load, which can add 1 to 2 kg of water. For trends, measure in the morning, and expect true lean mass to move slowly, perhaps 1 kg per month even with dedicated training.
There is no strict normal, though lean mass commonly runs about 65 to 75 percent of weight for women and 75 to 85 percent for men, since men carry less fat. Frame size shifts these figures considerably.
LBM is far more informative for muscular people, since BMI flags a bodybuilder as obese while ignoring record lean mass. BMI still works fine as a quick screen for sedentary populations.
A kilogram of each weighs the same, but muscle is roughly 18 percent denser, so 5 kg of extra muscle adds little bulk compared with 5 kg of fat. That is why two people with equal weight can look completely different.
Many drugs distribute mainly into lean tissue rather than fat, so basing the dose on total weight in someone with obesity risks an overdose. Water soluble agents like aminoglycosides are a standard example.
Not from training alone, but very high readings from a tape estimate usually mean measurement error rather than extraordinary muscle. If a formula claims your body fat is under about 5 percent, suspect the neck or waist numbers.
