Area of Octagon Calculator
One Side Is All You Need
Regular octagons appear in stop signs, garden pavilions, and floor tiles. This calculator takes a single Octagon Side value and returns the exact area of a regular eight-sided polygon. Woodworkers, tilers, and geometry students all get fast answers.
The Octagon Area Formula
A regular octagon with side s has area 2 x (1 + sqrt(2)) x s^2. Since sqrt(2) is about 1.414, the constant works out to roughly 4.828 times the side squared.
Example: for an Octagon Side of 5, area = 2 x 2.414 x 25 = 120.7 square units. Doubling the side to 10 quadruples the area to about 482.8, because the side is squared in the formula.
Using It Correctly
Type the side length, then press Calculate. Every side of a regular octagon is equal, so one measurement suffices; the shape must be regular, not stretched.
Common pitfall: entering a diagonal distance instead of a side. Also remember results come in square units, so meter sides return square meters.
Picture a backyard gazebo floor with eight equal sides of 4 feet. Enter 4 as the Octagon Side and press Calculate: the area comes back about 77.3 square feet, which is the number to carry to the lumber yard when ordering floorboards. The trickiest measuring moment is that carpenters often record the width across the flats instead of one side. Since a regular octagon spans 2.414 times its side, divide the across flats figure by 2.414 first, then enter that side value, and the formula stays exact for square feet, meters, or any unit you measured in.
Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as a regular octagon?
All eight sides and angles are equal, each interior angle measuring 135 degrees. If your shape has uneven sides, the single-side method loses accuracy. Measure carefully before entering.
Can I get perimeter from the side?
Yes, multiply the side by eight. A side of 5 gives a perimeter of 40, and that figure pairs naturally with the calculated area. Both values describe the same shape.
Why does the formula involve sqrt(2)?
A regular octagon can be cut from a square by removing four 45 degree corner triangles, and those right triangles carry the square root of 2 into the area expression.
What area does side 5 produce?
About 120.7 square units. Substituting s = 5 into 2 x (1 + sqrt(2)) x s^2 gives 120.7 once rounded to one decimal place. The exact value keeps sqrt(2).
Does the unit I type matter?
The calculator works with plain numbers, so interpret results yourself: centimeter sides yield square centimeters and feet yield square feet. Never mix units. Consistency keeps answers meaningful.
